Brett Miller - Boston Red Sox
Brett Miller, the Director of Special Events for the Boston Red Sox and Executive Director of Wasabi Fenway Bowl, hails from Fairfax, Virginia, and was a college wrestler at UNC Greensboro. The Bowl Game is a brand-building opportunity providing more than local sports entertainment. With only 42 bowl games, Brett is excited about their multi-year agreement. Although the Bowl Game is the youngest one to date, having launched in 2020, it has already proven to be second to none as a development opportunity.
Knock on the doors:
During his last two years, he attended Old Dominion in Norfolk after Greensboro discontinued its wrestling program. He dedicated himself to his academics and sports. He engaged in internships, worked on pre- and post-event setup on the administration side for the wrestling team, organized trips, and volunteered at the athletic department. He suggests seeking out internships and volunteering opportunities, regardless of whether they're free, part-time, or full-time, as most positions won't be handed to you. He believes that he can control his actions, and therefore, he strives to do his best in everything he can control, like following up with people. His philosophy is to "attack life," as nothing is ever given to you. Every successful entrepreneur and business executive has to work hard regardless of the industry. The common trait among them is that they never settle; they relentlessly pursue their goals.
Building your Tool Kit:
"Having diverse skill sets in various verticals can make you more attractive to employers after graduating," said Brett. Despite having a business degree, he was unsuccessful in his applications to every ticket sales position in professional sports. Eventually, he moved back in with his mom and took up a construction job. One day, while browsing job postings, he stumbled upon a Monster.com and Red Sox corporate partnership feature called "Cool Jobs," which listed an opening for an 8-month rotational internship with the Red Sox. Brett applied and went through a rigorous 5-month interview process, ultimately earning the role that paid $8 an hour. Brett approached the interview process with the same dedication and preparation as he would a sports competition. As a natural planner and goal-setter, he utilized available tools and conducted extensive research to ensure success. Knowing that he could only control his attitude and demeanor, he stood out.
Non-Linear Career Paths:
Brett's career journey has been anything but straightforward and linear. He has worked in various sports industry sectors, including ballpark operations, marketing, fan services, entertainment, group, and premium sales. The rotational program was best for him as he needed more precise direction on the area he wanted to work in. Through his experience, Brett could figure out what he liked and didn't like. During this time, he got close to a department called “Special Projects which at the time, orchestrated all of the large scale, non-baseball events at Fenway Park. After completing his internship, he stayed part-time. In preparation for the 2015 Shamrock Series football game between Notre Dame and Boston College, which was the first football game to be played at Fenway in nearly 50 years, he continued to learn about event operations and operations. At 25, Brett was barely surviving when a full-time role at Fenway Sports became available. He ran golf events and drove deals through the connections and events. The goal with Fenway Sports was to spread the footprint of events outside of baseball. Currently, the Fenway Park Events Team at the Red Sox does non-baseball events, and Brett focuses on ticketed events such as football, hockey, soccer, golf, and Irish hurling. As Brett continues to build on his experiences, he would love to run a business in sports and entertainment. He aims to plan for the future and set goals without being too strict about meeting deadlines. He is passionate about driving revenue and creating memorable experiences, which helps him love what he does daily. “I love working in sports and am thrilled to be on this rocket ship journey!"
