🏆 Building a Sports Brand
Dustin Canalin, Co-Founder of Trophy Hunting
Dustin Canalin, a Creative Director, Product Designer, and Artist, hails from the Bay Area and currently lives in New York City. He leads the sportswear brand Trophy Hunting and runs his design consultancy, DOC STUDIO, working with top brands like Nike, Jordan Brand, Under Armour/Curry Brand, and Puma. A basketball and lifestyle expert, Dustin played a pivotal role in the Nike and NBA partnership, creating iconic projects like the Golden State Warriors’ “The Town” uniform. His career represents the intersection of artistic passion and a love for sports.
Building a Brand
Dustin's journey began with a deep love for both sports and art. His early years were spent drawing comics and caricatures of athletes, which laid the groundwork for his creative pursuits. At the California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco, Dustin’s interests expanded beyond sports to embrace a wide range of design disciplines. “College was a transformative experience that broadened my interests far beyond sports,” he says. “I fell in love with design, architecture, fashion, furniture, and photography—anything that was designed intrigued me.” CCA provided essential design skills and taught him to think conceptually, communicate strategically, and solve problems.
During his internships at Bay Area ad agencies, Dustin relentlessly pursued a Nike internship. Despite multiple rejections, he continued to build his portfolio and created a website showcasing his college work. His persistence paid off when he landed a graphic designer role at AND1, an up-and-coming basketball brand in Philadelphia. This position allowed him to refine his design, business, and entrepreneurial skills, setting the stage for his own brand, UNDRCRWN. The entrepreneurial spirit he cultivated at AND1 remains a driving force in his career today.
Cultivating Curiosity
Dustin’s success working with renowned brands like Nike and Adidas and his own brand, Trophy Hunting, can be attributed to a core set of traits: curiosity, humility, and hard work. “Being curious enough to ask why things are the way they are, coupled with the insight and determination to challenge the norm, can make you a great asset to any organization,” Dustin shares. “However, you must also be humble enough to listen, learn, and accept failure as part of the process.” These qualities have allowed him to push boundaries and drive innovation continuously.
At Trophy Hunting, Dustin applies these principles daily. He insists on questioning the status quo and outworking the competition, blending his relentless drive with a deep sense of humility. This balance shapes not just his approach to business but also the culture at Trophy Hunting. “The Trophy Hunting brand is about celebrating the journey and embracing the process,” he explains. “It’s not just athletes who chase trophies; everyone has their dreams and aspirations.” By connecting deeply with elite athletes and everyday dreamers, Trophy Hunting blends sports with culture and fashion in an authentic and inspiring way.
Solve Problems and Embrace Challenges
Dustin highlights authenticity and problem-solving as crucial for career growth and team success. At Trophy Hunting, he looks for individuals who can challenge conventions and truly grasp the brand's vision while actively solving problems across all business areas. His experience with large corporations has shown him that operational and creative skills are essential, and he values self-starters who can handle the complexities of a growing brand. This skill set is critical as Trophy Hunting continues to innovate and thrive in the competitive sportswear industry.
He also stresses the importance of staying positive and focused when facing challenges. Building an independent apparel brand like Trophy Hunting presents daily obstacles that require resilience and a strategic approach. “Be present, enjoy the journey, and balance confidence with humility,” he advises. “Your first experience is not your last; you don’t need to get everything you want all at once. Embrace these memorable times, and don’t get caught chasing corporate and social acceptance. Enjoy the hunt!”
