🏆 Career Insights: The Intersection of Athletes and Media

Jimmy Spencer, SVP of Talent Partnerships at SpringHill Company

Jimmy Spencer is the SVP of Talent Partnerships at SpringHill Company, an entertainment and production company founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter in 2020. He has spent nearly a decade at SpringHill Co. including roles as GM of UNINTERRUPTED, head of athlete relations and running the company’s athlete content.

A Non-Traditional Journey

Jimmy’s career journey is anything but traditional. Fueled by an early love of sports, he channeled his passion into creative outlets like making mock newspapers and trading baseball cards. At Sacramento State, he rekindled his aspirations through the campus newspaper, eventually becoming editor-in-chief. That hands-on experience, combined with a relentless work ethic, landed him at The Sacramento Bee. Starting as a sports clerk and later transitioning to digital coverage, Jimmy became the youngest newsroom member during the digital media boom. Entrusted with developing the paper’s online sports content, he pioneered their digital footprint while covering the Sacramento Kings. This early success propelled him to NBC Sports in Connecticut, where he became an NFL content producer, shaping the digital experience for Sunday Night Football. It was a front-row seat to the rapidly evolving world of digital media, blending storytelling with innovation.

Jimmy calls his career a “Forrest Gump journey,” jumping between unique opportunities. The volatile journalism industry of the early 2000s – marked by layoffs and hiring freezes, led him to explore diverse paths, including political reporting, teaching high school English, and coaching basketball. A serendipitous phone call from sportswriter Sam Amick changed everything. Jimmy became the first employee of UNINTERRUPTED, the athlete-focused media platform by LeBron James and Maverick Carter. Combining his storytelling talent with an innate ability to build genuine connections, Jimmy helped shape UNINTERRUPTED into a content and marketing juggernaut. Now, as SVP of Talent Partnerships, Jimmy reflects on a career marked by adaptability, relationship-building, and embracing the unexpected. As he puts it: “The past decade has prepared me for the next.”

Emotional Intelligence: The X-Factor for Success

When asked about the qualities that define success, Jimmy points to emotional intelligence (EQ). To him, the most effective professionals combine work ethic, technical skills, and EQ—but it’s EQ that sets people apart. “Being kind, honest, and direct are pillars of strong emotional intelligence,” he explains. This approach builds trust and respect, cornerstones of long-term success. Jimmy believes EQ isn’t just innate—it’s a skill that can be practiced and refined. Treating people with respect and fostering genuine connections have guided his career. “If you treat everyone with respect and see people as equals, you’ll go far. That’s what I’ve seen from the most successful individuals.”

Chase Interesting Things & Embrace the Non-Linear Path

Jimmy’s advice to young professionals is simple yet profound: “Give yourself grace.” The road to success in the sports industry is rarely linear. “You’ll experience peaks and valleys,” he says, noting these ups and downs can happen over years or even weeks. Instead of chasing titles or accolades, Jimmy emphasizes the value of the skills you build and the relationships you foster. His father’s example – a “Renaissance man” who pursued passions like firefighting, flying, and hunting and fishing – inspired Jimmy to see his career as a collection of enriching chapters. “Chase interesting things,” he advises. “Your career doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be fulfilling.”

Using Communication to Overcome Obstacles

Jimmy opened up about one of his most significant challenges: living with anxiety. “It’s something I’ve dealt with since I was a kid,” he shares, describing how the same overwhelming feelings he faced in a sixth-grade classroom resurfaced in professional settings, such as boardrooms. Despite the difficulty of managing these feelings, Jimmy has found ways to navigate them.

In the workplace, Jimmy highlights the importance of communication. He’s proud of the openness within his team, where members feel safe sharing both personal and professional struggles. However, he acknowledges the fine line between bringing humanity into the office and maintaining professionalism. “Anxiety can’t be an excuse not to get the job done,” he says. Instead, he adapts – whether by sitting near the door during meetings or taking breaks – to ensure he can continue contributing effectively. For Jimmy, the ultimate lesson is about turning obstacles into opportunities for growth. “It’s not about letting anxiety block you,” he says. “It’s about finding ways to move through it.”
