🏈 Henry Organ: Sports Agent Insights

From Nike to Representing Top NFL Players

Henry Organ, Founder and CEO of Disruptive Sports Agency, is known for his excellent follow-through and commitment to his promises. His ultimate goal with Disruptive is to become an innovative agency that utilizes technology to benefit players, agents, and agencies while shifting the balance of power in their favor. Henry aims to revolutionize the field of representation and leave a lasting impact on the future of the sports industry. Rather than following trends set by others, he strives to identify problems that still need to be solved, creating new trends instead of reacting to their competitors' actions.

Building his foundation:

Henry had always been interested in the sports industry, but it was during a football practice at the Nike campus that he realized his true calling. Witnessing the massive scale of Nike and its various departments working together as a team to create innovative products for consumers like him, he was inspired to pursue a career in the industry. Henry worked in Nike's Football Brand Marketing Department, creating campaigns for the NFL and Nike-endorsed athletes. Henry aspired to become a Nike brand ambassador, but fate had other plans as someone else landed the job. He then shifted his career towards helping athletes achieve their potential on and off the field. We all have goals in our work and personal lives. However, evaluating our current situation and having a realistic view of our future is essential. This helps us make informed decisions and take steps towards achieving our goals.

Transitioning to becoming an entrepreneur in sports:

Leaving his position at Nike, a role many would consider a dream job - was a pivotal moment in Henry's career. At only 25 years old, leaving a job that took him two years to secure was a significant risk. Nevertheless, he believed a market gap needed filling, and he was determined to create a business that could do just that, even without any guarantee of contracts from major brands. This decision forced him to learn the complexities of running a business at a young age, which instilled the discipline required to become a successful entrepreneur. This challenge can be daunting after leaving a corporate setting; “it is like having to hunt for your food every day and then clean, cook, and store it for winter to ensure you don't starve.” After leaving Nike, Henry founded Focused Models and rebranded another company, formerly known as Focus Sports Agency. The transition presented three unique challenges that Henry faced head-on. Firstly, he had to rely on his ability to gain the trust of his clients, agents, and creatives. Secondly, he ensured his business was financially secure by investing his capital. Finally, he raised capital by partnering with the right business associates and setting clear expectations. Henry exemplifies resilience, the ability to adapt to change. Resilience helps individuals overcome challenges, learn from mistakes, and better handle stress. Research shows that resilience positively correlates with higher job satisfaction, work happiness, organizational commitment, and employee engagement. According to Harvard Health, it is linked to better mental health and overall well-being, including lower rates of depression and greater life satisfaction. Importantly, resilience is not an inherent trait but a facet of emotional intelligence that can be developed and strengthened.

Philosophy of success not just in sports but in life:

According to Henry, the most crucial strategy is to treat everyone equally. “Although many people suggest treating janitors like CEOs, few follow through. Authenticity is crucial because we are all human.” He approaches building relationships in a business-like manner. It takes more than just one attribute to work with Henry. His clients and co-workers must possess financial, physical, emotional, and spiritual fitness, proving that true success comes from a holistic approach to life. Furthermore, he expects them to strive towards achieving all four. If they cannot meet these attributes, they cannot work together. This philosophy is not only applicable to his work as an agent, but it is something he applies to all aspects of his life. Henry is motivated to help others in his life and career by his book, “The Informational Interview Playbook.” His book discusses setting goals and breaking them down into specific dates and milestones. Both parties must work together towards achieving those goals. It is crucial to manage expectations and be truthful with each other. Henry offers valuable lessons on navigating life and any field as he follows his grandfather’s two rules: 1) Seek advice from someone who has already achieved what you aspire to do. 2) Do not listen to those who have not walked the path you wish to take. Henry concludes by sharing this valuable insight: “Seek Discomfort. You must get comfortable with being uncomfortable; it’s truly the only way to succeed.”
