🏈 Jordan Green's path to the NFL
Experienced marketer with a track record at Champ Sports and MLB.
We are excited to share some valuable insights and inspiration from Jordan Green, the Manager of Content Partnerships for the NFL League Office. The trajectory of Jordan’s venture into the sports industry has been influenced by transformative experiences that have established a solid bedrock, one that he views as indispensable for attaining success.
🏅 Impressing in the Sports Industry:
Jordan believes that standing out in the sports industry goes beyond the reputation of the companies on your resume. Given most internships offer only so much access to in-depth projects, a large part of standing out is how you present yourself. Your work ethic, accountability, and how you carry yourself is what can set you apart. Demonstrate reliability through dedication and execution on projects assigned to you and you will quickly earn respect within your organization. During Jordan’s time at Champs Sporting Goods, he led regional activation efforts and content strategy through YouTube franchises. Additionally he spearheaded marketing efforts with the top youth athletes in sports. “These were impactful projects that I led successfully and I gained respect internally while simultaneously gaining confidence to lead and excel.” Showcase your leadership skills by taking ownership of projects and delivering results. Your hard work and attitude will set you apart in the competitive sports landscape.
🏈 Pursuing a Career at the NFL:
Similar to numerous sports organizations, being employed by the NFL is a shared aspiration among a large cohort of individuals who yearn to be part of an enterprise of such immense scale. Securing a degree in your desired field of interest bestows a notable advantage when pursuing opportunities in the NFL and the broader sports industry. Nevertheless, if you possess pertinent experience in your chosen field, a degree may not be a mandatory prerequisite for entering the industry. Accessing the applicability of your experience to the desired role is crucial, as it not only enhances your chances of securing the position but also sets the stage for your success and growth within it. Jordan has adeptly merged his diverse skill sets, enabling him to gauge his progression in terms of experience and expertise. Jordan’s passion for the NFL and his dedication to self-improvement is what helps him push through challenging moments and rejoice in moments of success. In the pursuit of a career in the NFL, combining qualifications, experiences, and dedication sets the stage for personal and professional fulfillment.
🔌 The Power of Informational Interviews:
Informational interviews can be game-changers when building your network and learning about the industry. Informationals played a significant role in shaping my career by helping me build my network and learn about the industry without having specific job experience. Here are three key elements I focus on during these interviews:
Do your homework: Prior to the interview, research the person and the company to understand their background and culture. Use social platforms like Twitter, IG, and LinkedIn to gather insights about the company's values and future goals.
Be a student of the game: Stay informed about industry trends and innovations through resources like Sports Business Journal, Front Office Sports, and sports podcasts (and of course Sports Business Ventures 😃 ) Being knowledgeable about the constantly evolving sports landscape sets you apart.
Provide value: Offer valuable insights and ideas that align with the company's goals. Propose thoughtful recommendations based on your research to showcase your proficiency and leave a lasting impression.
Continuing to nurture these relationships after the interview is vital. Sending thank-you notes and staying in touch even when responses are limited shows your commitment to building a strong network. These best practices will benefit your career in the long run.
Join sports networks: Leverage LinkedIn immediately; don't wait until graduation. Create a strong profile and start networking now.
Build your own process: Embrace a learning mindset, seek advice, absorb wisdom from mentors, and craft a tailored roadmap that suits your unique personality and ambitions.
Diversity of experiences: Learn what you like and, just as importantly, learn what you don’t like. You never know how any of your experiences will apply to what you do in the future.
