Mark Bailey is the Senior Director of Track Operations at Phoenix Raceway, overseeing NASCAR Championship Weekend operations. He has over 15 years of experience in motorsports, having held roles in business development, operations, and sales at various NASCAR-owned Properties before taking on his current role in Arizona.
From Daytona Beach to NASCAR Championship Weekend
Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, Mark grew up near Daytona International Speedway, the mecca of NASCAR. His early experiences attending races with his father instilled a deep appreciation for the sport—it has always been in his blood. Mark attended the University of Florida, initially pursuing a business major with dreams of working in a big city. Recognizing the Gator football games' impact on the community and Daytona Speedweeks's impact on his hometown, Mark changed his major to sports management.
While at UF, Mark gained valuable experience volunteering with the University Athletic Association and the Gainesville Sports Commission. He also worked at the O’Connell Center, supporting various events, including basketball, volleyball, and concerts, gaining a well-rounded perspective on event management. Mark's early experiences culminated in an internship with the Special Events department at Daytona International Speedway, marking the start of his career in motorsports. Over the past 15 years, he has held various roles in Operations, Facility Sales, and Corporate Hospitality/Partnership Sales at several NASCAR-owned properties, including Daytona, Auto Club Speedway, and Phoenix. His current position at Phoenix Raceway involves overseeing one of the sport’s most significant events – NASCAR Championship Weekend.
Mark’s career has been marked by significant challenges and transitions. Moving across the country from Daytona to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, and later to Phoenix Raceway, required considerable personal and professional adjustments. His approach to overcoming these challenges involves diving in, learning quickly, and committing fully to his new roles. Mark recalls the challenge of moving across the country by himself and then transitioning from Event Operations to Corporate Sales at Phoenix Raceway. Despite his initial reluctance, he embraced the opportunity, proving his ability to adapt and excel in different aspects of the business. One of Mark’s significant career moves was influenced by a mentor who encouraged him to take risks and explore new opportunities.
Throughout his career, Mark has observed that successful individuals in sports share common traits: a desire to learn and a genuine passion for the industry. He emphasizes the importance of avoiding the “that’s not my job” mindset, highlighting the necessity of teamwork and collaboration across different departments. Mark’s willingness to embrace “other duties as assigned,” such as dressing up as Santa in the July Phoenix heat for a media event, exemplifies this mentality. Mark believes that working at the highest level of sports requires a positive attitude and a willingness to get involved at all levels. He values people who demonstrate drive and a passion for their work, which is crucial for developing relationships and trust, especially in high-pressure environments.
