🏆 Building Women's Pro Sports

Stuart Sokoloff, Athletes Unlimited

Stuart Sokoloff is the manager of Group and season Ticket Sales at Athletes Unlimited, a network of professional women's sports leagues that include basketball, softball, volleyball, and lacrosse. Stuart has held positions with the San Francisco Giants, Phoenix Suns, Mercury, Baltimore Orioles, and the Spring Training facilities for the Cleveland Guardians and Cincinnati Reds.

Early Education to Breaking into Sports

Originally from the Washington, D.C., area, Stuart attended Springfield College in Massachusetts. His college years were marked by an early injury that shifted his focus from playing collegiate baseball to building a solid career foundation. Stuart immersed himself in campus life, undertaking 16 internships, participating in numerous clubs and sports, studying abroad, and serving as the vice president of his class.

A pivotal moment in Stuart’s early career came from an introduction by Rob Crain, who now serves as the Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships at the Boston Celtics. Craine’s support helped Stuart secure his first internship in minor league baseball, an experience he highly recommends due to the diverse skill set it develops. Stuart's internships in college spanned various roles, including partnership sales at the Cincinnati Reds’ and the Cleveland Guardians' spring training facility. His full-time career started with the Phoenix Suns in inside sales before transitioning to group sales.

Medical Sales and a Pivot Back to Sports

Despite success in sales at the Suns, Stuart took a detour into medical sales during the COVID-19 pandemic—a time not exactly suited for group sales. Although he performed well, he knew his true passion was sports. This led him back to the industry, where he found an opportunity with The Aspire Group on the San Francisco Giants campaign. Stuart and his team excelled, surpassing their sales goals significantly during the 2022 season.

He then shifted to his current role with Athletes Unlimited, which operates under a unique format where athletes earn points based on their performance, and teams are redrafted weekly. During the off-season, he dedicates his efforts to client outreach and exploring new markets. However, when the season is in full swing, Stuart transitions to help ensure an exceptional fan experience, which is crucial for the organization’s success.

Sales is the Memory-Making Business

Stuart's approach to sales is rooted in his passion for creating memorable experiences understanding that sports serve as a unique platform for fostering lasting memories. He believes in contributing to the "memory-making business," ensuring that every interaction and game leaves fans with a positive experience. This belief drives Stuart's approach to sales, where he strives to make sports an integral part of his clients' businesses. By demonstrating the tangible value that sports bring, Stuart drives revenue and fosters relationships, emphasizing the strategic importance of sports as an investment for his clients' overall success.

Stuart acknowledges the crucial role sales play as the lifeblood of sports teams, which is essential for their sustainability. He contrasts the abundance of sales positions with the scarcity of other roles, noting that sales can serve as a gateway into the sports industry for aspiring professionals. Stuart encourages individuals to consider sales as a way to gauge their interest in working in sports.
